Spirituality Isn't Complicated

Somewhere along the line, spirituality got taken over by people who love techniques and long routines. Suddenly there are 47 step morning rituals, colour coded journals, breathing methods with instruction manuals, and gurus who live in huts but somehow still run podcasts.

Apparently enlightenment has become a part time job.

But here is the truth nobody tells you:

Spirituality is just being here, right now, exactly as you are.

Even if that means wearing pyjamas that have given up, lying sideways like a highly emotional prawn, and eating crisps in bed with the dedication of a small raccoon. No breathwork. No journaling. No forced transformation. And definitely no chakras being aligned unless by accident.

Presence is presence, even when you are eating Monster Munch.

There is no cosmic punishment for choosing crisps over transcendence. In fact most people trying very hard to be spiritual would wake up faster if they stopped trying and let themselves be human for five whole minutes.

The universe does not care what you are doing. It cares how here you are while doing it.

And sometimes the present moment just tastes like crisps.

Sometimes enlightenment looks like a blanket pulled up to your chin, a bag rustling softly, the thought “I am not fixing anything right now”, and the bliss of knowing you are not performing for the imaginary spiritual police.

There is no reward for suffering. There is no reward for effort. There is only you, right here, experiencing whatever is honestly true in this moment.

If it is peace, great.

If it is chaos, also great.

If it is slightly regretful snacking, welcome to being human.

Spirituality was never meant to be a punishment. It was meant to feel like coming home.

And if your homecoming happens in bed, in pyjamas, covered in crumbs, congratulations. You have cracked it.

Presence is not an aesthetic. It is permission.

And today the permission slip says: be here exactly as you are. Crisps optional but highly recommended.

I completely agree with all the other comments here. Beautifully put as usual. You have such a gift to articulate the simple but essential truths of this thing we call "being human" with no jargon or formula. I will take this forward as much as I can... being present in the tears or the laughter, the pain and the joy, the clarity or the confusion (*this one I need to lean into more). Becky :)

Becky, you really have a gift for articulation as well. Your comment is a chef's kiss! Being Human is such a gift, and deceptively simple as it seems, you are so easily recognising. Take it forward as suits you, simply, with zero effort and maximum allowing. We are all perfectly imperfect, and the more we recognise that and ease into it the closer to pure presence we become. Pure presence is awakening and ultimately a beutiful state to be in whether your in bed eating crisps or on a mountain top or doing the hoovering!

I can't agree more. And as you say, my more blessed moments, have happened without chasing them. Thanks.

Thank you, Pili, yes, those moments arrive so naturally when we stop chasing and start allowing. It’s amazing how much finds us when we’re not trying to make anything happen. I’m glad this spoke to you.

This is such a refreshing take… it’s funny, honest, and somehow manages to make spirituality feel human again. I love how you remind us that presence doesn’t need performing, sometimes it really is just being here, crumbs and all.

I’m glad the honesty of it landed. Presence really is that simple, isn’t it? No performance, no polishing — just being here as we are, crumbs and all. Grateful you felt it.

Love this Lucy! It’s exactly as you’ve written. Being present is all it takes! True presence is often difficult given all the distractions around us, but find it we must!

Presence is strangely simple, isn’t it? Not easy, but simple. The more we return to it, the more everything else starts to soften around us. Grateful you felt the truth of it.
